Thomas' father, Lord Ferdinando Fairfax was appointed general of the Parliamentary forces in the north, and his Sir Thomas, was made lieutenant-general of the horse under him. Both father and son distinguished themselves in the campaigns in Yorkshire. |

The Battle of Seacroft Moor was a decisive loss for the Parliamentary forces during the 1st Civil War. Failing to destroy the bridge over the Wharfe at Tadcaster, Sir Thomas Fairfax's men were chased by the Royalist horse of Lord George Goring. The Parliamentarians lost over 1000 infantry, over 800 prisoners were captured by the Royalists and Fairfax escaped with just some of his surviving Horse to Leeds. The carnage reportedly turned the Cock Beck, which ran through the battlefield, red with the casualties' blood for several days |
