1st Lord Jermyn of St. Edmundsbury, Earl of St. Albans |
| Birth |
Abt 1604 |
England |
| Gender |
Male |
| History |
Abt 1642 |
France |
A young Stuart courtier who, largely due to his skill in speaking French, became the confidant and life-long friend of Henrietta Maria de Bourbon, the beautiful (9 year youger) wife of Charles I. Their closeness was widely attested by writers of the time, some went so far as to assert Henry Jermyn was the real father of Charles II.
Henry's plot to bring military force to bear on Parliament backfired, and he fled to France in exile. Henrietta Maria joined him abroad and together they raised an army and risking near death in a terrible storm, sailed to England to wage a moderately successful campaign from York against Parliamentary forces.
In Jul 1644, when the Queen consort became pregnant again, she fled to France with Henry Jermyn to set up home and the unofficial English court, at the Louvre, Paris.
Genealogist, broadcaster and writer Anthony Adolph writes about Henry in his book Full of Soup and Gold: the Life of Henry Jermyn |
