Memorial on Sanderson Bank Lane to Sarah Binks (née Laughton), Thomas Webster Wagstaff and John Whitehead
Memorial on Sanderson Bank Lane to Sarah Binks (née Laughton), Thomas Webster Wagstaff and John Whitehead
On the B1369 north side of the road between Blaxton and Westwoodside there is a memorial to an accident that took place on 11 Febr 1860. Thomas Binks lost control of the cart he was driving and his wife Sarah Binks together with Thomas Webster Wagstaff and John Whitehead died as the cart together with its horses overturned into the ditch at the side of the road. Thomas Binks and Thomas Webster Wagstaff were brothers-in-law.

The accident happened on Sanderson Bank Lane about 500 yards before the left turn in Idle Bank Lane. Bullhassocks farm the home of the Binks family was just over half a mile north from the junction. Thomas Binks managed a farm there of over 400 acres. Two cottages and Bullhassocks Farm House are still there. The name Hassocks comes from the course boggy grass that grew in the area.

The party were returning from Doncaster market and just before the accident had called at Bank End Inn (Horse & Stag) right on the Yorkshire Nottinghamshire border. This later became the Bank End Park Hotel. There is now later housing along Sanderson Bank Lane only part of the disused Hotel remains.

Bullhassocks steam pump was further up the lane and was used the assist drainage in the area, pumping water into the South Engine Drain which once carried the river Idle. In 1881 it was the home of James Trethewey from Parr, Cornwall who was employed to drive the steam pump. He had lived in the area with his family for just over 13 years. An earlier steam pump had stood in the fields to the south of Sanderson Bank close to the New Idle Drain.
