ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS.
Charley Caradus will not be in a position to play football this year. Charles - has a ' drone ' leg, and for the past few months it has actually refused to perform a fair share of the work of carrying him .
New Zealand Herald, Volume XXVII, Issue 8312, 19 July 1890
FOOTBALL
Caradus has a heavy task playing centrehalf with a very greasy ball and a heavy team of forwards against him, but acquitted himself well, and the other backs all did good work. Auckland possesses a strong defensive quartette in Hales, Webster, Goodwill, and Burrow, and their consistenly good tackling accounts for Ponsonby's small score. Hales was perhaps the best allround back on the field.'
New Zealand Herald, Volume XLVIII, Issue 8526, 28 March 1891
FOOTBALL.
A rather sudden determination of C. Caradus to accept a billet in Wellington will, I learn, deprive the Ponsonby Club of the services of that well known halfback, a loss which it will be difficult to replace.
New Zealand Herald, Volume XXVIII, Issue 8533, 6 April 1891
The Wellington Post says: A prominent footballer in Auckland, in the person of C. Caradus, is about to take up his residence in Wellington. He is one of the best half backs in the Ponsonby Club, and will be a decided acquisition to the ranks of Wellington footballers.
Observer, Volume XI, Issue 641, 11 April 1891, Page 11
Buff Caradus is now in Wellington and his services are being eagerly sought after by most of the clubs. (Football-Rugby) He was a workers representative on the Bootmakers Union, and featured in athletics and Rugby often being mentioned in the newspapers. By 11 may he was playing for Poneke.
By 19th May
Evening Post, Volume XLI, Issue 117, 19 May 1891, Page 2
The quarterly meeting of the Wellington Operative Bootmakers Union was held last night, when the election of officers for the ensuing quarter took place and resulted as follows :-President, Mr. P. T. Murphy (reelected); vice-presidents, Messrs. Avery and Dagg; secretary, Mr Lawrence (re elected); minute secretary, Mr. Miles (re-elected); committee, Messrs. Marriott, Gray, Collins, Warren, Jackson, Caradus, Reynolds, Currie, Williams, Lightfoot, and Bayliss. The quarterly balance-sheet showed the total receipts to be ¹512 8s 8½d,
New Zealand Herald, Volume XXIX, Issue 8854, 16 April 1892
Old Aucklanders seem to be in great request in the South, judging from the career of Charles Caradus, an old Ponsonby player, now in Wellington. he is says a contemporary, to represent the Ponekes in their matches with the Merivale and East Christchurch Clubs at Easter. One Southern paper has rhe following :" C. Caradus, the wellknown Poneke half-back, will not be able to take part in his club's championship fixtures this season, as he is leaving for Christchurch shortly after Easter. His departure will cause a considerable gap in the Poneke backs." Another paper says :-" There is some talk of Caradus. the Poneke halfback, coming to Dunedin and throwing in his lot with the Kaikorai Club." All these statements do not quite seem to tally; but with the following extract from a Wellington paper most Aucklanders will agree: He is a "most dashing, hard-working half-back, besides one whose good temper, both on and off the field has gained him a host of friends
It would appear that in May 1892 he was playing in Kaikorai's Probable Fifteen (Dunedin) This being confirmed in Auckland Star, Volume XXIII, Issue 114, 14 May 1892, Page 2 where we read 'Buff' Caradus has after all gone to Dunodin, where he will play for the Kaikorai Club.
New Zealand Herald, Volume XXIX, Issue 8896, 4 June 1892
For the Kaikorai, Caradus, the ex-Ponsonby and Poneke halfback, who has lately thrown in his lot with the hill men, played an admirable game at halfback. From the very commencement of the game it was evident that he would be a thorn in the side of the opposing players, for he travelled round the scrums with a smartness that it was a treat to see, though this occasionally led him off side ; and his all-round exhibition -serviceable and withal eminently good; humoured-proved that in him the Kaikorai have a decided acquisition.
He played representative Rugby for Otago in 1892
Evening Post, Volume XLIV, Issue 92, 15 October 1892
Local footballers will bo interested to loam that "Buff " Caradus, who played for the Poneke Olub last year, and who has been residing in Dunedin for the last few months, passed through Wellington yesterday on his way to Auckland, where his relatives reside, and where he has obtained employment.
