William Playne Wise, Gentleman, made and signed his Will on 2 Apri,l 1876 in the presence of Edward Playne of Springfield, Minchinhampton and Thomas R. Huxley, Solicitor, Worcester.
He states that he was late of Greigshot House (Rodborough), but now residing at Painswick and he appointed Charles Playne, Woollen Cloth Manufacturer, of Theescoombe in the parish of Minchinhampton, Trustee and Executor of his Will and requested that he sell and convert into money all his Estate and Effects. After payment of his funeral and other debts, to pay two thirds of the residue to his daughter Fanny Augusta, the wife of Mr. Robert Marshall and one third to his son, Frederick Marriott Wise. As well, he stated that he bequeathed to his late Wife's Sister, Mrs. Anne Wainwright, a Legacy of ¹50 in recognition of the great kindness and attention he received from her since his wife's decease. In addition, he wished her to be paid at his decease any sum owed by him for board and lodging or otherwise. This suggests that he lived with her for the last few years of his life.
His Will was read to him before he signed it as he was partially blind.
William died 14 May, 1880, aged 84, in Painswick. It is interesting to note that his last remaining son, Frederick Marriott Wise died 13 May, 1876, just after his father signed his Will and several years before his father.
William had had 11 children, losing 7 of them as well as his first wife, between 1840 and 1842. Three of them went to Australia and the 11th died in 1849. Even his second wife predeceased him. He must have found it difficult to carry on at that time.
