Appointed the first mayor of the newly-created London Borough of Paddington, and was re-elected in the following year. To commemorate his retirement in 1902 he was presented with his portrait painted by Sidney Edward Paget (b. 4 Oct 1860, 60 Pentonville Road, London d. 28 Jan 1908). Paget had created the original and influential illustrations for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories in The Strand Magazine. The portrait of Sir John Aird is said to be familiar to the character of Duke of Holdernesse. Doyle's story "The Adventure of the Priory School" was published in The Strand Magazine in Feb 1904, not long after Sir John's retirement as Mayor and Paget's portrait of him. Arrangements can be made to view Paget's portrait of Sir John Aird when visiting the Sherlock Holmes Collection at Marylebone Library. | ||
