The trip need not have been across the continent, but just a few hundred miles to keep up with a frontier that offered new land and opportunities. • Most families did not use the legendary Conestoga wagons, the big ones that were bowed in the middle. Conestogas were like semi-trailers, primarily employed for moving heavy freight by teamsters and merchants. • The vehicle in the photo is not a Conestoga, but an emigrant farm wagon. The wooden sideboards are straight and the canvas bonnet is not bowed. This is a typical farm wagon, about 4 feet wide by 12 feet long, with canvas attached to hoops; the ends can be tied shut at night for privacy and weather protection.
