Duplicate records

#1 | Posted: 14 Jan 2009 07:41 | Edited by: adrian
Duplicate records sometimes exist when a new gedcom has been uploaded to the site which might update data on an individual. In these cases we use a program to help us match and merge old and new data. We also do this for place names. However these programes are not automatic and it takes a human being to be the final arbitrator.

Merging individuals means data can be irretrievably lost (almost). Merging places updates that place name for all individuals linked to it. So one needs to be careful. These are powerful program as they also allows delete without constraint.

If you would be interested in learning more and helping us merge people or places please Contact Us.

If you see duplicate entries, please Contact Us and we will merge them.

Thanks for that Adrian .I promise I have never changed or disposed of any information that I have not put into the database.Oddly however some of the duplicated material was only known to 3 other people apart from me until I added it to this site and had taken months of searching to find as it was not on IGI or any other site and was in a very strange place in parish records.

Re Duplicates:
I can see where duplicates have occurred as I have entered new people: they get inserted as a Father/Mother of the children and again as the marriage partner of that individual. I have ended up with people in the Maclean family branch having 2 husbands who are the same person and having children with each part of the husband. Can we fix this before it gets too complicated? I wanted the CORRECT individual to retain their lowest number ID.
Could you take a look please Adrian. I am learning not to take a lack of a partner etc in a box as a sign they are missing...
Thanks- sorry to be a newbie pest!

Hi Kay
I fixed Agnes May Charlton MacLean m. James Ignatius Costigan. For some reason there were two marriage records, one contained the date and place, the other the children. I moved the date and place to the record with the children and then removed the relationships on the redundant family record. I think you have access to do this too if you need to. Otherwise just ask.
Kind regards

Thanks for the fix Adrian. I have now learned which "Edit" to click to fix some of the booboos myself. I'll gradually get better at it I hope! It's really confusing where long lines of people call their children different combinations of the same basic set of names, in different order! Just as bad as when there were only a few names to choose from and every wife was Mary and every husband William. I am now having fun trying to track people's christenings and marriages on the IGI database for English parishes. Of course there are huge gaps right in the parishes I want around Kent and Staffs!
