![]() | Temple Belwood, Belton in Axholme, in the 1920s From Temple Belwood its Past and Present by JG Rees, 1933. Barnes & Breeze, Printers, Epworh Bells Print Works. The name arises from the grant of certain lands called the Cow Pasture, at Belwode, by Roger de Mowbray, to a Preceptory of the Knight Teplars which he founded at Balsall, Warwickshire about the year 1145. At one time the estate consisted of 3,000 acres, the farms were sold to the tenants about 1900, following which all attempts, including a boys school failed to maintain the house and its outbuildings. I would be 12 in 1945, at this time we would cycle from Crowle to explore the ruins of Temple Belwood, I think it had been destroyed by fire. It finally disappeared totally under the motorway when it was constructed | |
![]() | Temple Belwood, Belton in Axholme From a Topographical Account of the Isle of Axholme Vol.1 by W Peck published 1815 Joan, grandaughter of Richard de Belwood married Henry Vavasour. He inherited the property when his wife's father died.It remained in the family for four generations until the time of the drainage, Thomas Vavasour, was appointed by the Isle Commoners to manage their cause against the Participants, he was called their 'Solicitor'. He petitioned King Charles I to stop Cornelius Vermuyden from draining Hatfield Chase and spent a large part of his estate defending his neighbours and was obliged to sell up. He is a character in the "Manuscript in a Red Box" at the time he had to sell. His son being the hero. In the novel if the son had married the mortgagee's daughter the sale would have not been necessary. It is most likely fiction. |

The holiday centre failed. A Mr McNamee ran it successfully as a High School for boys until he died after which his wife gave it up. During the 1st World War it was used as a hostel for Borstal boys who worked on the farms. |
