Sarah Ann Allen

Female Abt 1850 - 1910  (~ 60 years)

Edwin and Sarah Ann Newbitt (née Allen)

Edwin was born in Epworth, bapt. Epworth 5/2/1847. His parents were Robert Newbitt 1818-1904 (born Belton, died Epworth) and Ann Clark 1822-1849 (born & died Epworth). See 1851 England Census :- Lincolnshire > Epworth > Dist.2a > p.40. Note - Newbitt transcribed as Newbell !

Wife Sarah Ann was Sarah Ann Allen born Epworth 1850, daughter of John Allen (b. Haxey) & Ann Allen nee Crawshaw (b. Epworth). See 1861 England Census :- Lincolnshire > Epworth > Dist.3 > p.6.

For Edwin and Sarah Ann together see 1901 England Census :- Lincolnshire > Epworth > Dist.3 > p.5. Note - Newbitt now transcribed as Newbill !

Before the next census in 1911 the couple moved to Barnsley but with Sarah Ann dying in 1910, Edwin is widowed - see 1911 > Yorkshire-West Riding > Barnsley > Dist.26 > p.634. Sarah was buried at Epworth (as shown in the parish register) 15/4/1910. I presume that in turn Edwin was buried with her but I have not seen the parish register to confirm (online records only run to 1911).

Notes: When The Epworth Bells owner Foster Barnes started his newspaper in 1873, one of the first things he did was to log all gravestones and mounds which they knew of the contents and these were put in the Epworth Bells, a few each week until they had all been done, I believe this was 1872/3, as can be seen there are very few gravestones on that picture, all the stone ones perished but marble ones are still there, it used to be covered in MI's.
