Silver from the Americas enabled Spain to oppose the Dutch War of Independence which became known as The Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) and launch an attack against their supporters, the English.
The Spanish Armada (Grande y Felicísima Armada "Great and Most Fortunate Navy" or Armada Invencible "Invincible Fleet") was defeated by an English Fleet led by Francis Drakee off Gravelines which was then part of The Netherlands. The Anglo-Spanish War continued between 1585 and1604.
Despite setbacks Spain became the leading European power, a situation of which its citizens were only just becoming aware.
Spain conducted war with France from 1590 until the time of King Philip's death in 1598. |
History |
1596 |
Spain |
Economic and administrative problems multiplied, particularly in Castile, and the weakness of the native economy became evident in the following century. Rising inflation, financially draining wars in Europe, the ongoing aftermath of the expulsion of the Jews and Moors from Spain, and Spain's growing dependency on the gold and silver imports, combined to cause several bankruptcies that caused economic crisis in the country.
In northern and central Spain and Andalusía in the south, a plague of 1596-1602 killed 600,000 to 700,000 people, about 8% of the population. |
