History | 18 Oct 1009 | Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Golgotha (Hill of Calvary), Jerusalem, Palestine |
During the 14 year gap where no Holy Roman Emperor ruled (between Otto III and Henry II), the Muslim calendar ticked over to a pivotal moment. One of its great Muslim Caliphs al-Hakim bi-Amr Allah looted the treasures of the 700 year old Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem and dismantled it brick by brick. Hakim was dead by 1021 and within two decades of its destruction, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem was rebuilt.
History | 14 Feb 1014 | Rome (Roma), Lazio (Latium), Italy |
After being crowned Holy Roman Emperor in Rome by Pope Benedict VIII, Henry II gifts his orb, sceptre, crown and coronation robes to Cluny Abbey, perhaps to muster all the supernatural support he could summon. On Easter Day 1003, the holiest festival of the year, Henry had signed a treaty of friendship with the pagan Wends and in 1015 rode with the Wends at his side to put down Boleslav, the upstart Duke of christian Poland. It was scandalous but the campaign culminated in a lasting compromise peace with the Poles in 1018.
